What Did You Do Today?
Me? I climbed a friking mountain and this is how I feel now 🙂
Blogger’s Note: There is WiFi over here, but it was been really sloooooow. We are talking 128kb 😦 so my posts may be a couple days late… waiting for a faster connection. Sorry. ALSO… This was an amazing walk today with beautiful scenery so we have lots of pic today.
OK… let’s start from the beginning. I got up at 6:30, showered, grabbed a quick breakfast and was walking at 7:15am… Jet Lag and all 🙂
Not many people on the streets at 7am with the sun barely up, just a few pilgrims:
While crossing over this bridge (above), I met a Swede name Helena and we started walking together. The route is called the Napoleon Way because this is the way he took his army over the Pyrenean Mountains. This first stage is the toughest – see the above stats and elevation map.
As soon as we left the town, we started to climb the mountains. Here are a few shots from the beginning:
A couple of miles down the trail was vending machine for the pilgrims (In all my years I’ve been called lots of thing, but never a pilgrim 🙂 ) They had trail mix, sports drinks… for sale.
About 45 minutes later we were high enough (in elevation 🙂 ) to see the morning mist rising from the valleys. It was really amazing!
Eventually we made it to Orisson, which is about 1/3 of the way to the peak. I bought a sandwich for lunch and headed out.
The views continued to be amazing:
This guy has the right idea 🙂
After several hours, this is how I felt 🙂 I was thinking about riding one of these bad boys for the rest of the hike 🙂
Saw a few of these guys as well… but they were too small to ride.
A few more shots before we hit the peak:
Not too far from the top, we met Scott (from Seattle) and Jordan (Atlanta). We all had pretty similar pace so we decided to walk together. Here is Scott & Jordan at the border marker between France in Spain.
Those of you have followed my other blogs know about the SandwichCam. This is were I take a photo of where I had my lunch. Just before we reached the top, we decided to have lunch.
After a nice lunch we started our last drive to the peak. We finally made it to the top!!!!
We then started our way down. The descent was pretty steep at the top (see the diagram at the top of the post). I don’t know which was harder… the hike up OR the hike down. Here are a few shots on the way down:
Home Sweet Home!!!!!
After 8 tough hours, we finally made it to our hostel. This is the build I slept in.
Here is better shot of the complex. It was quite nice.
After a quick shower, I grabbed a quick dinner and headed over to the church for a blessing of the pilgrims:
- It was a really tough hike today. Walking with my posse helped a lot. Shoutout to Helena, Scott & Jordan!
- When we reached our hostel I was tried, but not too sore.
- Along the way down we found a girl (Heather) from Korea who was just sitting on the side of the trail. She had “hit the wall”. We gave her some trail mix and a PowerBar and told her to drink some water. We waiting until she felt better and she joined us at the hostel.
- It was an amazing walk today… only have ~32 more 🙂
I’m going to bed!!! I hope I can get out bed in the morning 🙂
Hope you enjoyed the adventure.
